Downed Chief Broken Favre

Brett "I left the jets" Favre says he might have cracked/broken ribs. Quick question Brett why would a 40 year old QB tell the rest of the NFL that, maybe he's on the painkillers again.

Matt Cassel could miss 2-4 weeks medial collateral ligament sprain. This means Tyler Thigpen and Brodie Croyle would likely start the season at QB, not only will they have the worst backup in the league the Chief's will have the worst named QB (would you wear a Thigpen or a Croyle jersey... i think not).

Two New Sox make Debut in Boston Win

A couple weeks ago, Paul Byrd was pitching to 13 and under kids for a little league team. Today, he pitched six shutout innings in his first game out of retirement for the Red Sox in their win over Toronto 7-0. "I'm just so excited to be back. I want a World Series ring," he said. "Hopefully I can help this team get there. I'll clean toilets if I have to, and I told them that."

Byrd (1-0), out of baseball after finishing last year with the Red Sox, signed a minor league contract on Aug. 5. He struck out one and walked three.

Also making his Boston debut today was lefty veteran reliever Billy Wagner, pitching one inning of scoreless relief with three strikeouts. Wagner, was acquired in a deal last week with the Mets.

Manny Delcarmen and Takashi Saito rounded out the shutout pitching from the Boston bullpen. Meanwhile, Cy Young candidate Roy Halladay gave up 4 earned runs in 6 innings including a solo homerun from Rhode Island Native Rocco Baldelli his sixth of the year. Halladay has lost his last three decisions.

Byrd was sent up from the minors only a couple days ago in hopes to fill the number five spot in the Sox rotation. A position that has been a merry-go-round of faces in the last couple months.

Honest Gabe - Issue #1

Welcome to the very first issue of Honest Gabe! I am your host, Mr. Gabe Murgo! For those of you who don't know me, myself and Chris go WAYYY back to 4th grade where we became best friends and he has graciously asked me to contribute to his blog - so I will be giving my FANTASY advice each and every week for you - the fans of the E 'n' I show! Please email your questions to the blog site and we will post them up for you the following week!

Today's issue will be brief and straight to the point: how to build a Fantasy Football Championship team!

I had the #2 overall pick in my draft this past weekend and as expected, Adrian Peterson went first. In my 12 team league, you get a .5 points per reception and there is a RB/WR flex position with only 2 WR spots, so my pick was between MJD and Matt Forte (of MY Chicago Bears!) I went with MJD for a number of reasons:
1. MJD catches more passes
2. There is no competition taking away carries for MJD in JAX
3. Kevin Jones WILL cut into Matt Forte's carries to keep the 2nd year pro fresh during the season.
This made my decision easy. It is important to select players with your MIND and not your HEART.

With the #2 pick in your draft, what you want to do is select a stud RB right off the bat. Your second pick I also recommend getting a top RB. In this case, I selected Clinton Portis who is going up against the 2nd easiest run defenses in 2009. Your 3rd pick you want to pick a top tier WR. I selected Marques Colston who will have a huge year for the air mailing Saints. Your 4th pick I would take the best available player. In this case it was Braylon Edwards who is the whole team of Cleveland this year. My 5th pick I locked up my flex position as I selected Darren McFadden who is lightning quick and can catch passes out of the backfield. Again, he is the entire team for the Raiders.
Now you can lock up your TE and QB with your next 2 picks (Winslow + Schaub) and then it is very IMPORTANT to solidify your bench as injuries WILL occur during the season.
The rest of my draft was: Delhomme for my QB, Packers and Redskins for defenses, Elam for my kicker, Sproles, McCoy, Fred Taylor for m backup RB's, with Hixon and Harvin as my WR's.

Because of this draft strategy I am an instant contender within the league. Make sure you follow the waiver wire closely, and if you can make a trade or two, you should find yourself in the playoff hunt.

Until next time, this is Honest Gabe telling you the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth!

Michael Vick signs with Eagles

PHILADELPHIA – By halftime, the Linc was buzzing: Michael Vick was an Eagle.

Suddenly, no one seemed to care much about the preseason game against the New England Patriots on Thursday night. All that mattered to most fans was that the disgraced quarterback had joined their team.

Even though five-time Pro Bowl quarterback Donovan McNabb is the man on the Philadelphia Eagles, the team gave Vick a one-year deal with an option for a second year.

"We don't need another quarterback, especially him," longtime fan Donald Crispin said.

The 29-year-old Vick, once the NFL's highest-paid player, has been out of action since 2006. The former Atlanta Falcons star was convicted in August 2007 of conspiracy and running a dogfighting ring, and served 18 of a 23-month sentence in federal prison. He also was suspended indefinitely by the NFL.

"I'm a believer that as long as people go through the right process, they deserve a second chance," Eagles coach Andy Reid said. "He's got great people on his side; there isn't a finer person than Tony Dungy. He's proven he's on the right track."

Commissioner Roger Goodell conditionally lifted Vick's suspension on July 27, allowing him to sign with a team, practice and play in the last two preseason games. Once the season begins, Vick can participate in all team activities except games, and Goodell said he would consider Vick for full reinstatement by Week 6 (Oct. 18-19) at the latest.

The Eagles reached the NFC championship game last season under McNabb, but are still looking for their elusive first Super Bowl win.

McNabb has led the Eagles to five NFC title games and one Super Bowl appearance in the last eight years, and was rewarded with a $5.3 million raise in the offseason. The Eagles tore up his old contract with two years remaining, and gave him a new deal worth $24.5 million over the next two seasons.

Philadelphia is a surprise landing point for Vick. It was among 26 clubs that said there was no interest in him, but that may have changed when backup Kevin Kolb strained a knee ligament earlier this week. Kolb's injury isn't serious and he's expected to return next week. The Eagles also have veteran A.J. Feeley.

"There won't be a quarterback controversy," Reid said. "We have to make sure he gets back in football shape. He comes into a good, stable unit here. Donovan and Michael are very close."

Reid made sure he spoke with McNabb before signing Vick.

"I pretty much lobbied to get him here," McNabb said. "I believe in second chances and what better place to get a second chance than here with this group of guys. ... He's no threat to me, not for Kolb. We had the opportunity to add another weapon to our offense."

Vick could be used in a variation of the Wildcat offense that the Miami Dolphins made popular last season. He's also familiar with the West Coast offense, though Atlanta ran a different version than the one Philadelphia uses.

"He's an unbelievable athlete, both running the ball and throwing it," Reid said. "I'll think of something for him."

When news of Vick's signing circulated in the press box during the first half of the Eagles' preseason opener against the Patriots, even the team's public relations staff seemed surprised.

The crowd quickly caught on at Lincoln Financial Field. Fans standing on the concourse were in disbelief. One guy wondered how quickly he'd be able to buy a Vick jersey. Another asked if this was a joke.

"It doesn't make any sense," said Michelle Harlan, a mother attending her first NFL game with a young son.

In a "60 Minutes" interview set to air Sunday, Vick accepted blame for not stopping the illegal dogfighting operation he bankrolled.

Vick said he feels "some tremendous hurt behind what happened."

He said he should have taken "the initiative to stop it all ... I didn't."

Asked if he was more concerned about his playing career or the dogs he hurt, Vick replied, "Football don't even matter."

The animal rights group, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, wasted no time reminding people exactly what Vick had done.

"PETA and millions of decent football fans around the world are disappointed that the Eagles decided to sign a guy who hung dogs from trees. He electrocuted them with jumper cables and held them under water," PETA spokesman Dan Shannon told The Associated Press.

"You have to wonder what sort of message this sends to young fans who care about animals and don't want them to be harmed."

Reid believes most Eagles fans will accept Vick.

"This is America. We do make mistakes," Reid said. "This situation is a chance to prove he's doing the right things. He's been proactive speaking across the country."

Since Reid became the head coach in 1999, the Eagles have avoided players with character issues. The lone exception came in 2004 when Philadelphia acquired wide receiver Terrell Owens. That move paid off when Owens helped lead the Eagles to the Super Bowl in his first season. But T.O. quickly wore out his welcome, criticizing management over a contract dispute and feuding with McNabb. He was released midway through the 2005 season.

"I couldn't envision Mike being here," said former Eagles linebacker Ike Reese, a teammate of Vick's in Atlanta in 2005-06. "I didn't see where he fit in. I think most people in the locker room would accept it. Donovan is very secure in his position. He wants to see Mike get another opportunity."

Players around the NFL expressed happiness that Vick was back in the league.

"That's a lot of talent right there that was going to go to waste if nobody picked him up," Baltimore running back Willis McGahee said. "I think he'll fit in pretty good there. They're going to take care of him."

Ravens wide receiver Derrick Mason said he hopes the Eagles use him as a quarterback instead of a gimmick player.

"He's better than 95 percent of the quarterbacks that are starting right now in this league," Mason said. "He can sit behind Donovan and learn, and hopefully he'll get an opportunity to get in there some games. But if he just takes this time to grow as a player, his future is going to be bright."

Pats Trade for DE Derrick Burgess from Oakland

Patriots trade for Oakland's Derrick Burgess

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) The New England Patriots obtained defensive end Derrick Burgess on Thursday after the two-time Pro Bowl player held out of the Oakland Raiders training camp in hopes of being traded.

The Patriots gave up undisclosed draft considerations for Burgess, who is coming off an injury-plagued season in which he had 3 1/2 sacks in 10 games. New England released offensive lineman Al Johnson.

The trade was announced on the ninth day of Burgess' holdout from the team he recorded 38 1/2 sacks with in four seasons, including a club-record and league-best 16 in 2005. He had 11 the next year and made the Pro Bowl both times.

His total dropped to eight in 2007, but he missed two games.

"He chose not to be here for whatever reasons and now the deal is done and we move forward, as does he," Raiders coach Tom Cable said. "We just moved on without him and it is what it is."

In three seasons with Philadelphia and four with Oakland, the 6-foot-2, 260-pound Burgess had 47 sacks in 85 games. He also missed the 2003 season with a torn Achilles' tendon.

The Patriots were 11-5 last season but had 31 sacks, tied for 14th. The Raiders were 5-11 with 32 sacks.

Burgess is entering the final year of his contract with a $2 million salary and felt underpaid for most of his time with the Raiders. He joined them when he signed a five-year, $18 million contract as a free agent before the 2005 season.

New England and Oakland held discussions around the time of the draft in late April. Then Burgess stayed away from all the Raiders optional offseason workouts and did not go onto the field during May's mandatory minicamp because of a reported upset stomach.

"He'll be just fine in New England's system," Oakland defensive end Jay Richardson said. "I'm sure he'll probably love it out there, coming off the edge like he does. It's funny because it was actually kind of quiet (here), no one really knew. A lot of guys thought sooner or later he'll walk in those doors and we'll keep rolling."

The Eagles drafted Burgess in 2001 with the first pick of the third round out of Mississippi.

The Patriots signed Johnson in March after he spent four seasons with Dallas, which drafted him in the second round in 2003 out of Wisconsin. He played for Arizona in 2007 and was on the Cardinals injured reserve list in 2008 before they released him. He then signed with Miami where he played four games.

Yankee Fans feeling the heat......

The glorious part about my job is the travel. While many people can't stand spending 3 hours or more in their car on an average day, I enjoy it. I listen to sports radio all day while on the road. I listen to Boston sports when im in the Northern half of my area and NY sports radio when im in the southern half. The parody is sometimes comedic. The contrast between the charisma of the two crowds has generally been distinct. Historically, or at least in my lifetime....Boston fans have always been the more aggressive and hateful voice of the longtime rivalry. Today, something changed.

As I listened to Mike Francesa's afternoon show on WFAN, I heard numerous angry/nervous callers get on the line and rant about the importance of tonight's game and this weekend's series. How much they need to sweep Boston in this series, and much the Red Sox deserve to lose. More importantly how they have felt that they (The Yanks) have been a second place team for years. The exact attitude Red Sox Nation had for decades prior to 04'. Two rings later, and a season that will include a dead heat three-team competition for two playoff spots....can change a Yankee Fan's spirit. There is a nervousness behind some of these voices that didn't exist before. Even Francesa seem to be blind-sided with some of the callers.

It's obvious how important this series is to both sides, but the voice of Red Sox hatred coming from Yankee town was loud and clear. Are Yankee fans starting to feel the heat and pressure going into the final seven weeks of the season?

BURRESS MISSING IN NFL ACTION

"Missing in action", said one reporter last winter when asked where will Plaxico be next year if he was charged. Today, Buress was finally charged with two counts of criminal possession of a weapon and one count reckless endangerment. The story goes last winter Buress pulled a Cheddar Bob (shooting himself) in a nightclub, not reporting it to police, and going to a hospital under a alias . He Faces up to 3 years in jail with 1.5 year minimum. "M.I.A. he's lucky he wasn't D.O.A. at hospital.", says this reporter. Guns don't kill people, egos make it easier for people to kill themselves.
